I moved into my dorm at Northeastern University on Wednesday, August 27th. The big city, the bright lights, and numbers swirling around in my head. I was ready to embark on my 5 year journey as a math major.

Months ago when I was applying to schools and thinking about what I wanted to do, I knew one thing for certain: I had no clue what I wanted to do. All throughout all of my schooling before this I knew I liked math, so that narrowed the options down a bit but I still had no clue what I wanted to do with this math. I was pretty sure I didn’t like theoretical math and so I chose applied mathematics. But what would I even apply this math to? This is the main and most attractive reason of why I chose this major over any other: anything.

The versatility and flexibility that being an applied math major gave me reassured me that I picking a wrong major won’t set me on a path of dread and unhappiness. But not everyone I run across sees being a math major this way. I am greeted with contorted faces and sounds of actual disgust when I tell them I am a math major, which is usually followed with “what can you even do with math?” My response is usually along the lines of “what can’t you do with math!”
